There’s more to life than just going to work, dining, housekeeping, and watching TV. Even people who are obsessed with their careers may feel as if their life is flat and meaningless.
You may be lucky enough to find the true meaning of your work, but most of us desire greater fulfilment.
We are all searching for some kind of meaning to life.
But, how do you find it?
1. Be Impactful. Be purposeful in your everyday actions. Add value and find ways to resolve other people’s problems, and you’ll feel better overall. It feels great to help others, to make a difference in someone else’s life, and your life will feel more meaningful afterwards.
2. Live according to your values. When you disregard your values, it is easy for you to feel unfulfilled. You quickly find yourself in a cycle, living a life that doesn’t fulfil you. List your values and make your decisions in accordance with your values.
3. Build meaningful relationships. It’s not that you can’t have an enriching life without others, but it’s less likely. A village is needed to establish a community. Become an active member of your community and contribute to a lasting legacy. People have a way of making life meaningful.
4. Remove any excess. It’s easy to let go of the little things that don’t matter. Go through your home and get rid of anything but the things you need or like. De-clutter your life and let go of emotional baggage/s. Do the same with your social circle and activities. If you don’t need it or love it, let it go.
5. Be joyful. The more time you devote to things that make you happy, the more meaningful your life will be. Make a list of things you enjoy and program more of these activities in your life.
6. Belong to something greater than yourself. What do you think is really important? Saving the whales? The environment? Helping needy children? Homelessness? Find a cause you think is very significant and give whatever you want.
7. Be grateful. Gratitude is powerful. O give thanks to God, for he is good, for his mercies endure forever. It’s a warm, calming feeling. Spend some minutes every day and make a list of all that makes you feel grateful. Try identifying at least one new thing on a daily basis.
8. Consider everyone who benefits by your existence.
The people your company serves.
Your family members, in particular your spouse/partner and your children.
Your aging mother and father.
Your co-workers
Your friends
These are just some of the people who need you on a daily basis. Make a list of all the people that depend on you. Believing your life to be meaningful has a real impact on your physical and mental health.
Many studies of people over the age of 65 have shown that people who believe their lives have meaning get better results from mental and physical health. They also have increased cognitive functions.
As you get older, it becomes increasingly important for you to live a life with a purpose.
One does not need to save the world to find a deeper meaning in one’s life. Be aware of the contributions you are already making. Create a life that you find meaningful and it will also bring you greater joy, happiness and fulfilment.
